Great Affogato at Home

Affogato Recipe - How to Make a Really Great Affogato

Posted by Vinod Jethwani on

This is hands down one of the easiest desserts to whip up when you’re entertaining guests or have friends dropping in for a last-minute catch-up.

Made with vanilla ice cream, espresso coffee and a cheeky dash of liqueur, this is the perfect treat for the holiday season.

Did you know Affogato means 'drowned' in Italian? Let's drown in some coffee right now and enjoy making this lip-smacking dessert.

Preparation Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops of high-quality vanilla ice cream
  • 1 shot espresso per person
  • 1 tbsp nut or coffee liqueur (optional)
  • Dark chocolate shavings or wafer for decoration

Method

  1. Brew an espresso (one per person).
  2. Scoop 1-2 scoops of vanilla ice cream into a small glass or bowl and pour over a shot of espresso.
  3. Pour 1 tbsp of nut liqueur or your liqueur of choice over the ice cream and grate over a little dark chocolate, or simply add a chocolate wafer to decorate.
Easy Affogato recipe

Tip #1

This is an easy recipe, but it's important to serve Affogato as soon as the espresso is poured over the ice cream as it will melt quickly. Alternatively, assemble ice cream into glasses and provide the coffee shot and liqueur on the side in shot glasses or mini serving jugs for your guests to 'DIY' their own Affogato, which is actually kind of fun :)

You can also spoon ice cream into cups in advance and put it back into the freezer, ready to serve when your guests arrive.

Tip #2

Coffee can be brewed in your home espresso machine or if you don't have your own machine, get your hands on a Moka Pot for true Italian-style espresso. A 6 six cup Moka Pot easy way to brew a few shots of coffee, and it can be brought to the table to serve, which looks pretty darn impressive in our opinion.

Tip #3

Experiment with liqueurs or offer options for your guests. Amaretto, Frangelico or even an Irish liqueur such as Bailey's will add a spin on this classic dessert. Get creative with toppings and consider crushed nuts or chocolate curls if you are feeling fancy.
